  • Anubhav Sinha is a noted Indian filmmaker who is known for making films of different genres from “Tum Bin” (2001), a romantic drama to “Article 15” (2019), a crime drama and social awakening film.
  • He was born in a middle-class family in Allahabad. Talking about his growing up in Allahabad and Varanasi, he says,

I’m a small-town guy, my father retired earning a salary of Rs 12,000 in 1991 — I got swayed by the glamour, glitz, paraphernalia of movie-making.”

  • Anubhav is so much in awe of the city he grew up, i.e., Varanasi that he has named his production house after it – Benaras Media Works. The production house was started in 2012.
  • In 1988, he passed out from the Aligarh Muslim University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Before coming to Mumbai (on 4 December 1990) to try his luck in Bollywood, he worked as an engineer for two years in New Delhi.
  • He loves cooking in his leisure time, and he considers himself a professional chef.
  • Before becoming an independent director, he worked as an assistant director to Pankaj Parashar, till 1994.
  • “Shikast,” a flagship show of Zee TV is considered his breakthrough in the entertainment world.

  • After “Shikast,” Anubhav ventured into another tv show “Sea Hawks” for UTV.
  • After directing 72 successful episodes of “Sea Hawks,” he switched to directing music videos, which he did till 2000. “Deewana” and “Jaan” are two of his music videos that were widely liked by the public.

  • In 2001, he started working on his debut movie “Tum Bin,” which starred Priyanshu ChatterjeeHimanshu Malik, Amrita Prakash,Raqesh Vashisth, and Sandali Sinha. The film is considered his most successful film so far and has attained a cult status.

  • In 2005, his third directorial multi-starrer movie “Dus” became the biggest opening of that time.
  • His other notable movies include Tathastu (2006), Cash (2007), Ra. One (2011), and Tum Bin 2.
  • With his film “Mulk” (2018); starring Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu, he ventured into a new genre of filmmaking, which involves social issues and went on to make films having the elements of social awakening like “Article 15” (2019) and “Thappad” (2020). On this genre switch, he says,

Earlier, I was making films to entertain. My priority now is communication. I am making films to say something, but how do I communicate that with my audience? I am not approaching writing with the goal of making a cinematic breakthrough, but am focused on talking to people while keeping things real. And that automatically makes the film mainstream. Inside, I must have always been politically aware and responsible, but, yes, a lot of what I am now was triggered by political activity around me 2013 onwards, which was making me uncomfortable, and it still does. So I started reacting to it through my films.”

  • After the release of “Article 15,” Anubhav Sinha revealed in an interview that he read an article from the Indian Constitution every day. He said,

I try to. I always have a PDF tab on my Firefox and whenever I can, I open it and read. I have been doing this for the last 8 months.”

  • In an interview, when asked to review the films he had made till then, he said,

I am okay with Cash and Dus but Tathastu I am quite ashamed of. It was a straight life of John Q. Back those days, you were living in an environment where everyone was doing it so you didn’t even realise it was wrong. But in hindsight it was a shameful thing to do.”

  • When asked about the culture of the film industry, he said,

The industry doesn’t care. It’s a capital-intensive and success-oriented place. It doesn’t care about caste or political ideologies. It only understands two classes: success and failure. People know who is leaning where, but that’s alright.”
