At the age of 17, Bhatt made her acting debut in 1989 with Daddy, a TV film directed by her father Mahesh Bhatt. In the film, she plays a soul-searching adolescent girl who is estranged from her alcoholic father, played by actor Anupam Kher. Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, a version of the Oscar-winning Hollywood classic It Happened One Night, was her biggest solo hit and her big-screen debut. Pooja Bhatt has appeared in several daring shoots, including Stardust.
Her most well-known films in the 1990s included Sadak opposite Sanjay Dutt, Junoon, Jaanam, and Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee opposite Rahul Roy, Sir, and Guneghar opposite Atul Agnihotri, Tadipaar and Naaraaz opposite Mithun Chakraborty, Hum Dono opposite Rishi Kapoor, Angrakshak opposite Sunny Deol, Chaahat opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Tamanna, the super-hit and multi-starrer Border and Zakhm, opposite Ajay Devgan.
